CHICAGO - The Northern University softball team fell to Big East foe DePaul, 9-1, in five innings in its final non-conference game of the season Wednesday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium.
The Blue Demons (35-11) jumped on top of the Huskies early with a four spot in the first inning. Three of those runs were unearned. Northern Illinois (23-24) got on the board in the top of the third when Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) blasted her fifth home run of the season. However, that would be the lone run for the Huskies while DePaul offense didn't let up.
A run in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth allowed the Blue Demons to take an eight-run lead and end the contest early.
The Huskies out hit DePaul, 8-7, with Sinner leading the way with a 2-for-2 day with an RBI and run scored. Unfortunately, the NIU defense committed three errors which the Blue Demons took advantage of. Of the nine runs scored, only two were earned.
"When you give up seven unearned runs to any team, let alone a team like DePaul, you're going to have a hard time being successful," said NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard.
Freshman Stephanie Tofft (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) saw her school-record hitting streak end at 36 games with an 0-for-3 performance.
The Huskies conclude their seven-game road trip and resume Mid-American Conference play this weekend when the Huskies travel to Miami (OH) on Friday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Central Time. Fans can follow all the action live via Gametracker at NIUHuskies.com.
