WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Northern Illinois men’s golf team concluded its regular season with a 16th-place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational on Sunday Saturday on the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Senior Bryce Emory (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) had the best individual finish for the Huskies, tying for 24th.
“It was a tough day, physically and mentally for the Huskies,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We were down a man, Nick Schiavi had some kind of a back injury on his fourth or fifth hole, he played a couple more holes but just couldn’t go, so we were four-court-four.
“On the plus side, Griffin (Bauman) really battled all day, he made some birdies late to come in with a solid 73 to lead us and move up nine spots. Bryce (Emory) snuck into the top-25, so Griffin and Bryce were certainly positives looking ahead to the conference meet.”
Bauman’s 73 was the best round of the day for the Huskies as he finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 227, tied for 37th after opening the day in a tie for 46th. After a difficult start to the day in which he was five-over through his first six holes, Emory carded a 79 to finish tied for 24th, his third top-25 finish of the season.
With sophomore Nick Schiavi (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) forced to withdraw due to injury, NIU counted and 82 from both senior Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) and senior Greg Pohlmann (Decatur, Ill./Lakeview). Luedtke finished with a three-round 244 and Pohlmann carded a 54-hole total of 253.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, May 3, when they open play at the Mid-American Conference Championship at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The three-day event will continue through Sunday, May 5.
