NIU Picks Up Veteran Runner from Scotland

Nov. 25, 2014

DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s cross country team added a veteran long-distance from Scotland on Tuesday when Katie Bristow accepted admission to the University.

Bristow, a native of Lerwick, Scotland, will come to NIU as a graduate student with one year of athletic eligibility remaining after spending her undergraduate time at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Her running career highlights include a third-place finish in the 5,000m even at the 2014 Scottish Athletics Senior National Championship, and she also owns impressive personal bests of 37:10 in the 10,000m, 17:44 in the 5,000m, 10:18 in the 3,000m and 4:43 in the 1,500m.

“Katie is another great addition to our long-distance group,” NIU cross country head coach Greg Hipp said. “I am looking forward to having someone with her level of experience within our young group. I expect that she will be able to immediately strengthen our cross country team next fall.”

Bristow joins Ericka Hibser as new additions to the NIU long-distance program that will begin competing with the Huskies in the fall of 2015. She will become the team's second international member, along with Spain native Lorena Martin.
