NORMAL, Ill. - Due to harsh weather conditions, the Northern Illinois and Bradley baseball game at The Corn Crib Saturday night was suspended under the halting rule after seven innings of play. The Huskies trailed the Braves, 5-1, and will start the game at the plate in the top of the eighth inning in the next NIU-BU showdown on April 16 at Dozer Field.
"As this game moved on, it was starting to get really, really cold out there for both teams. Coach Dominguez suggested we play a halted game since we're going to play them again next month and pick the game up from there," said Head Coach Ed Mathey. "Given the weather conditions, it's a non-conference game, we don't want to see any of our guys get hurt or put them in jeopardy."
Originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, it was decided at the home plate meeting prior to first pitch to play one game as the first pitch temperature at 7:18 p.m., was recorded at 40 degrees with 18 mile an hour winds.
As time went on, the temperatures continued to drop while the winds began to create colder playing conditions on the diamond.
Prior to the seventh inning, both the coaches and umpires decided to suspend the game under the holding rule due to the cold temperatures with play to be resumed in the eighth inning next meeting on April 16 at Bradley.
The Huskies will return to the diamond Tuesday, March 18 when it heads to The Circle to take on UIC at 3:05 p.m. Central.
