DeKALB - Thunder and lightning forced cancellation of the Northern Illinois University women's cross country team season opener Friday night. The Huskies were scheduled to run against Northwestern and DePaul in the first NIU Night Race at the NIU Outdoor Sports Complex at 8 p.m.

Lightning initially delayed the meet but when it was followed by a strong thunderstorm cell that settled over the area bringing rain, more lightning and thunder, the event was officially called off.

NIU's next scheduled competition is Sept. 12, 2014 at the Forest Park Festival in St. Louis, Mo.
