NIU Postgame Notes
***NIU extended its road winning streak to 16 consecutive games won in the opponents’ home stadium, the nation’s longest streak by an FBS team in the country.
***The Huskies have won 25 consecutive regular season games dating back to a season-opening loss to Iowa at Soldier Field in 2012.
*** NIU has won three consecutive games against Big Ten opponents with today’s win added to last year’s victories over Iowa (30-27) and Purdue (55-24). The Huskies are 5-3 versus teams from the Big Ten since Sept. 19, 2009.
***With the victory, NIU earned its first win in school history against Northwestern. The Huskies improved to 1-6-1 all-time against the Wildcats.
***Paris Logan made his second career interception on a one-handed grab in the end zone in the first quarter. Logan also tallied eight tackles in the game, marking a career high for the junior defensive back.
***NIU quarterback Matt McIntosh recorded his first career punt in the first quarter, the quick kick on fourth down went for 42 yards and pinned Northwestern at its two-yard line.
***Senior tailback Cameron Stingily made his first appearance of the season and gained 46 yards on six rushes to average 7.7 yards/rush.
***NIU was shut out for the first time in a half since Dec. 2, 2011 when it failed to score in the first half. The Huskies trailed Ohio at halftime of the Mid-American Conference Championship game by a score of 20-0. NIU came back to win the game 23-20.
***NIU shut out an opponent in the first half for the second consecutive game. The Huskies blanked Presbyterian in the first half last week.
***For the second straight game, NIU used three quarterbacks in the game. Matt McIntosh started the game and was in for the entirety of the first quarter, Anthony Maddie took over in the second quarter for one drive and Drew Hare played the entire second half. Hare had the most success, finishing with 109 yards passing, 31 yards rushing and three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing).
***Rod Carey improved to 14-3 as NIU head coach since taking over before the Huskies’ appearance in the 2013 Orange Bowl.
***NIU senior wide receiver Da’Ron Brown had a huge game, grabbing two touchdown passes from Drew Hare in the second half of 18 and 59 yards, respectively. Brown finished with six receptions for 128 yards to record his second career 100-yard receiving game. He tied his career high with two touchdown receptions and moved into a tie for 10th on the NIU all-time receiving touchdowns list with 16.
***The Huskie defensive line got after Northwestern quarterback Trevor Siemian throughout the game and finished with five sacks. Jason Meehan and Rasheen Lemon each notched two total sacks, a career high for both players. Lemon also finished with a career-best nine tackles.
***Junior defensive end Perez Ford and true freshman cornerback Mayomi Olootu each broke up a career-high two passes.
***NIU dominated the ground game on both sides of the ball, outgaining Northwestern in rushing yards by a 221-72 margin. It was the ninth time in the last 10 games that NIU rushed for more than 200 yards as a team. Seven different Huskies rushed the ball, led by Akeem Daniels (16 carries, 81 yards).
***In a game where field possession was extremely important, Tyler Wedel excelled with his five punts for NIU. His 46.0 yards per punt and his 57-yard punt in the first quarter both were career-high marks for the senior specialist.
***Sophomore Chad Beebe recorded a career-long 36-yard punt return to set up the Huskies’ last touchdown.
***The Huskies held Northwestern to 72 rushing yards on 37 carries a week after Presbyterian gained just 69 yards on 31 rushes. It’s the first time NIU has held opponents to less than 100 rushing yards in back-to-back games since Nov. 23 and Nov. 30, 2012 versus Eastern Michigan (94 yards) and Kent State (70 yards), respectively.
