Huskies Sweep UW Whitewater, UIC

Jan. 23, 2015

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team swept a pair of matches on Friday at the Boylan Tennis Center. The Huskies defeated UW Whitewater, 7-0, in their morning match before besting UIC, 5-2, in the afternoon.

“It was a long day of tennis, we challenged our guys to play with a higher level of intensity than last week and they did,” said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. “We had four freshmen in our lineup today and had match points in both matches we lost, so we couldn’t ask for much more. I am really proud of our young team today.”

NIU opened play winning two of three doubles matches against the Warhawks of UW Whitewater to take the doubles point. Senior Frederic Cadieux (Verdun, Quebec, Canada/Ediuard-Montpetit) and freshman Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) picked up a win at first doubles, 6-4, while freshman Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) won at third doubles, 6-2.

In singles play, the Huskies swept all six matches. Daun needed three sets to win at number four, 6-0, 6-7, 10-2 over Cam Laktash. NIU’s other five victories came in straight sets; Hjertonsson picked up his team-best 10th win of the year with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Rithwik Rajshekhar Raman at number three while freshman Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) earned his first win as a Huskie at number six, 6-1, 6-1, over Martin Beck.

In their second match of the day, the Huskies also won the doubles point, taking two of three matches against UIC. Lundkvist and freshman Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) earned a victory at number two, 7-6, while Formont and Hjertonsson paired for a 6-4 win at number three doubles.

Formont, Hjertonsson and Lundkvist also won their singles matches against the Flames. Formont bettered Louis Theodor at number two, 6-4, 6-2. At fourth singles, Hjertonsson knocked off Carl Hedstrom in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Lundkvist earned his second win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 defeat of Max Cederkall at sixth singles. NIU’s other singles win over UIC was at number one as Cadieux earned a three set victory over Isaac Loveras, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6.

The Huskies will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 25, as they host IUPUI at 6:30 p.m., at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
