Huskie Complete Weekend Sweep With Win Over IUPUI

Jan. 26, 2015

DEKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team completed a three-match weekend sweep with a 4-2 victory over IUPUI on Sunday evening at Boylan Tennis Center.

“Give credit to IUPUI they fought to the bitter end,” said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. “For us. we made it hard on ourselves. We dominated doubles but it really didn't show because we would break serve then give it right back. In singles, we struggled to play our style, which is common with such a young team, as individuals we need to be more disciplined, play our style and not try to be something were not, but that's where we need to grow as a team.

“We won today, our team took a step forward, these young freshmen are learning how to compete each and every time we get into these situations and our leaders, Frederic (Cadieux) and Simon (Formont) have done awesome. We just have a lot of growing to do.”

The Huskies claimed the doubles point with wins at number two and number three. Freshmen Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) and Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) won at second doubles, 6-3, while junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) and freshman Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) claimed a 6-3 win at number three.

At number one doubles, senior Frederic Cadieux (Verdun, Quebec, Canada/Ediuard-Montpetit) and freshman Kevin DaunVasteras (Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) held a 5-4 lead when their match was stopped with the double point already clinched by the Huskies.

In singles action, Cadieux and Lundkvist each claimed straight-set victories. Cadieux was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at number two over Alex Toliver while Lundkvist earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at number five over Thomas Hulme. Formont clinched the win for the Huskies with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Jac Newis at number one.

One singles match, number six, did not reach a conclusion as Hamel and IUPUI’s Marcus Nalley were deadlocked, 2-2, in the third set as the Huskies clinched the overall match victory.

NIU will return to action next Sunday, Feb. 1, as the Huskies travel to Bloomington, Ind., to face the Indiana Hoosiers at 4 p.m.
