CLEVELAND – Simon Formont from the Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team and
Nelle Youel from the Huskie women’s tennis team swept the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week awards, the conference announced on Thursday morning.
NIU is the first school in the MAC this academic year to receive both awards in the same week, and six Huskies have been recognized by the conference as Scholar Athlete of the Week since August, tied with Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan for the most in the league.
It’s the first time NIU has swept the weekly honors since December 6, 2012, when
Nabal Jefferson and
Amanda Corral accomplished the feat.
Simon Formont (Orleans, France/Lycee Camille Claudel) produced a perfect 6-0 record last weekend, winning all of his No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles matches to help the NIU men’s tennis team win its thre matches against UW-Whitewater, UIC and IUPUI. Formont dropped just one set the entire weekend as he faced the opponent’s top singles player while giving the Huskies doubles depth in every contest.
The junior has a 3.811 grade-point average in business administration.
Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) started the spring women’s tennis season in impressive fashion, going 4-0 overall in her matches to help NIU defeat Lewis and Cleveland State last weekend. The four wins moved the senior into a tie for the NIU school record for combined career victories with 137, level with Anna Widen’s Huskie record that has stood since 2000, and she can break that record when NIU faces Bradley on Saturday.
Youel owns a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as she pursues a pre-physical therapy major with a minor in Spanish.
