NIU Football 2015: Postgame Notes versus Miami

Oct. 17, 2015

Recap | Final Stats

***NIU won its 16th consecutive regular season game versus a MAC East opponent with today’s 45-12 win over Miami. The Huskies now lead the all-time series with the RedHawks, 9-8.

***Joel Bouagnon scored his 11th and 12th rushing touchdowns of the year in the first quarter with a pair of 22-yard runs and added #13 on a career-long 53-yard run in the third quarter. He has at least one rushing score in six of NIU’s seven games this season.

*** Bouagnon recorded his fifth multi-touchdown game of the season with two first-quarter scoring runs and added a third rushing TD in the third quarter.

***Tommylee Lewis scored his first touchdown since the 2013 season on a 32-yard reception from Drew Hare in the first quarter. Lewis’ catch marked the first TD overall since the 2013 contest versus UMass (11-2-13) when he scored on the rush, and his first touchdown CATCH since the CMU game that year (10-19-13). Lewis scored his 16th career touchdown.

***With a 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Joel Bouagnon recorded his fourth 100-yard rushing game of 2015 (and of his career). Bouagnon finished the game with 134 yards on 14 carries and three rushing scores, all for over 20 yards. He averaged 9.6 yards per carry.

***Super sophomore cornerback Shawun Lurry picked off his team and FBS leading SEVENTH pass of the season in the third quarter to set up Bouagnon’s 53-yard TD run. Lurry has intercepted passes in five straight games, dating back to the Ohio State contest, and has interceptions in six of NIU’s seven games this season.

***Lurry continues to add to his school record for interception return yards as he returned today’s interception 47 yards from the end zone to the #NIU 47-yard line. Lurry, who entered the game leading the nation in interception return yards, now has 209 on the year. (previous record was 120 by Chase Carter on two interceptions in 2007)

***Linebacker Bobby Jones made his first career start and responded with a career-high 13 tackles, his first career solo sack and two tackles for loss.

***On the third carry of his career, and in his first action at running back since the Murray State game in Week 2, true freshman Marcus Jones broke through the Miami defense for a season-long 73-yard rushing touchdown, the longest run by a Huskie player since Oct. 25, 2014 when Drew Hare had a 78-yard touchdown run versus Eastern Michigan. It was the first rushing touchdown of Jones’ career.

***Huskie running backs accounted for five rushing scores on the day and the Huskies’ 311 rushing yards is a season high and the most since the 2014 MAC Championship game win over Bowling Green.

***Miami’s 12 points is the lowest allowed by the Huskies in 2015 and the fewest by an NIU opponent since the 2014 season opener when Presbyterian scored just three points on the Huskies. It is the fewest points scored by an FBS opponent since Nov. 23, 2012 when the Huskies recorded a 49-7 NIU win over Eastern Michigan.

***NIU tied its season high with four sacks and had the most sacks since the season opener versus UNLV. Ladell Fleming’s two sacks are the most by a Huskie in a single game this year. ***Six of NIU’s seven scoring drives Saturday lasted less than two minutes with five of those taking less than one minute off the clock. Those five drives combined lasted just 3:16. The Huskies longest drive was its only non-touchdown drive of the day with the 26-yard field goal by Christian Hagan completing a 15-play, 69-yard drive that lasted 4:20.
