DEKALB, Ill. -- Sophomore Luke Read (Ilford, England/Barking Abbey School) of the Northern Illinois University men’s soccer team was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week for the second time this season on Tuesday.
Read scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies last Tuesday (Sept. 29) in a 3-2 double overtime win at Eastern Illinois and helped the NIU defense post its fourth shutout of the season on Saturday (Oct. 3) in a 1-0 overtime victory over Bowling Green in the conference opener. Read leads the Huskies with four goals and eight points this season.
This week’s recognition marks the second time Read has earned National Team of the Week honors from Top Drawer Soccer this season, the sophomore defender was also recognized on Sept. 15 after netting game-winning goals in a pair of wins over Florida Atlantic and Stetson in the NIU adidas Invitational.
Read also becomes just the second Huskie to earn Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honors twice in a single season, joining goalkeeper Joe Zimka who was recognized twice during the 2006 campaign (Oct. 1 and Oct. 15).
Following four consecutive road games, NIU returns home tonight with a 6-2-0 record as they host Milwaukee in the annual LeWang Trophy match. Game time between the Huskies and Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m., at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
