Boomer Mays Earns MAC West Defensive Player of the Week

Nov. 23, 2015

DEKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois University linebacker Boomer Mays garnered Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week accolades following his performance in NIU's victory over Western Michigan as the league announced weekly accolades today.

Mays, who is picking up MAC West Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, recorded 15 tackles, including 12 solo stops, and two pass break ups, both career highs.

With four minutes left in the game, Mays made the biggest stop of the game. On first and goal from the four-yard line, the native of Lawrence, Kan. stopped Broncos' running back Jamauri Bogan the one-yard line preventing him from getting into the end zone. The Huskies held on the next three downs and took over on the four-yard line.

Mays also assisted Perez Ford (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) with a quarterback hurry and sack of five yards in the second quarter. The senior linebacker leads the Huskies in tackles with 83 on the season.

This week's player of the week honor for Mays is his second in three games and the fourth consecutive week a Huskie has won a league player of the week award. Aregeros Turner joins Mays as NIU's only two-time player of the week honorees. Turner earned MAC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades following his play at Boston College and Buffalo.

Eight Huskies have picked up league honors this season. Joel Bouagnon (Buffalo), Christian Hagan (Toledo), Drew Hare (Eastern Michigan), Bobby Jones IV (Miami), Shawun Lurry (Ohio State) and Kenny Golladay (UNLV) have picked up one of the MAC's weekly awards.

The Huskies (8-3, 6-1 MAC) welcome Ohio (7-4, 4-3) to Huskie Stadium Wednesday, Nov. 24 to take on the Bobcats. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. C.T. and will be televised nationally live on ESPNU.
