NIU Football 2015: Postgame Quotes

Dec. 4, 2015

2015 Marathon MAC Football Championship Game:
NIU Postgame Quotes:

NIU Head Coach Rod Carey:
(opening statement)

"Give Bowling Green a lot of credit as they played a whale of a ball game. They really got us in all three phases, offense, defense and special teams and the fourth one being turnovers. We didn’t get our running game going and that’s the story of the game besides the turnovers.

"The defense was out there a lot of the time, I thought they played hard but the game changed when the line started moving the wrong way. Offensively I don’t think we ever really established the run, we tried to protect Tommy Fielder as I thought he played well. There was some inexperience there and it hurt him when he tried to run. You have to give Bowling Green all the credit in the world. They did a great job tonight and they are a good football team. They are well coached and tonight they were the better team."

(on what Bowling Green did defensively)
"They played harder than us up front. We couldn’t get anything going in the run game."

(on adjustments)
"You’re going to go in and try to run the ball with a young quarterback like we have. Your down 21-0 so we had to throw the ball and try to get back in the game."

(on how hard it is to prepare for a championship game with a true freshman)
"I thought he prepared really well all week, I thought our guys prepared very well and tonight I thought we made good adjustments but in the end I don’t think we played well enough or coached well enough. It starts with me and trickles down to everyone else. Our preparation was good."

(on Huskies pick six then Bowling Green scoring on the next drive)
"You know its hard that whenever you get a pick six then the defense has to right back out on the field. If you can get that three and out right there, then sometimes you can play on that emotion. But we didn’t and they had been out there so much so I think that drive really wore on them."

NIU Linebacker Boomer Mays

(on Bowling Green’s running game)
"They were well-executed and did exactly what they needed to do to get first downs and get points on the board."

(on dealing with Bowling Green RB Travis Greene)
"Anytime you have a leader on offense like they have in Travis (Greene) the offense clicks and they all got on the same page and got their offense going."

(on stopping Bowling Green’s offense when they can be so dangerous in the passing game)
"Honestly its all about knowing where your gaps are and being ready to play."
