INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team earned a 4-3 decision at Butler on Saturday afternoon, to earn its first road win of the season. The victory improved the Huskies to 6-2 on the season.

The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Butler took the match at number one, 6-2, over senior Frederic Cadieux (Verdun, Quebec, Canada/Ediuard-Montpetit) and freshman Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege).

NIU evened the doubles with a win at number three as junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) and freshman Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) earned a 6-4 victory over Tommy Marx and Sam O’Neill.

Butler outlasted NIU at number two doubles as Alex and Austin Woldmoe clipped freshman Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and freshman Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun), 7-6 (6).

In singles play, NIU won three-set matches at number one, two and four to get the Huskies off to a good start. Cadieux was victorious at number one over Austin Woldmoe, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. At number two, Formont also dropped the first set before rallying to defeat Brandon Woods, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The same was true at number four where Hamel earned a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback victory over Alex Woldmoe.

Butler has won at number three as Hjertonsson fell to Sam O’Neill, 6-4, 6-3, as the match came down to the final two singles spots.

The Huskies clinched the match win as sophomore Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe), who did not play in the doubles matches, earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-3, victory over Tommy Marx to earn just his third dual match victory of the spring.

NIU will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 28, as the Huskies travel to St. Louis, Mo., to face the Billikens. The match against Saint Louis is scheduled for 5 p.m.
