ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team continued its perfect spring break trip to Florida win victories over Appalachian State and Ferris State on Monday. The Huskies bettered the Mountaineers, 5-2, in the afternoon before taking care of the Bulldogs, 4-0, in the evening match to improve to 11-3 on the season.
"Today was a challenge, playing two matches in 80-plus degree temperatures," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "Our guys accepted the challenge and we played strong all day. Tomorrow we have to do it again, playing our fourth match in three days. Our guys are being physically tested, I know they are tired but in order to win championships you have to perform when you aren't always 100 percent so we will see if we can push our limits and finish strong."
The Huskies opened play on Monday by taking the doubles point, winning two matches before the third was called with the point clinched by NIU.
Freshman Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) and freshman Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) earned a 6-4 win at number one while junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) and freshman Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) were victorious at number three, 6-3.
In singles, the Huskies won four of the six matches in straight-sets to finish off their 10th win of the season, taking each of the bottom three matches in the lineup. Cadieux was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at number two over Jack Maddocks. freshman Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jan-Willem Kleynhans at number four. At number five, sophomore Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Trey Morris and at number six Lundkvist was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Rob Jenkins.
In the afternoon match, the Huskies downed the Bulldogs, 4-0. Senior Frederic Cadieux (Verdun, Quebec, Canada/Ediuard-Montpetit) and Hamel were 6-2 winners and number two while Formont and Hjertonsson won for the second time on the day, 6-3, at number three.
NIU won at third, fourth and fifth singles as the match was called with the Huskies clinching the win. Hjertonsson took the first set at number three, 6-4, from Roger Hernandez before Hernandez retired at 3-0 in the second. Hamel was victorious again with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tyler Bridges at number four and Manzanas claimed his second victory over the day, 6-1, 6-2, over Zachary Grabovic.
NIU will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10, as the Huskies face Boston University in Palm City, Fla., at 10 a.m. CT.
