MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak end on Thursday night at the Huskies fell, 4-2, at Marquette. With the setback, the Huskies drop to 8-3 overall, 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference.
"Well another 4-3 match between NIU and Marquette," said NIU head coach
Patrick Fisher. "It was close from start to finish, but experience got us tonight. We did not handle the important moments well enough to win and we didn't capitalize when we needed to.
"We were in position to control doubles at position two and three but we weren't able to take the point. We then put ourselves to win six first sets (in singles) but we were only able to get three. The guys did a job fighting back but ultimately we just could not deliver enough knockout punches."
Marquette took two of the three doubles matches, with the match at number three being stopped, 5-5. Junior
Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) and freshman
Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) were even with Kristiyan Trukov and Mackenzie Stearns when the Golden Eagles clinched the point.
In singles play, Hjertonsson won his 14th match of the year as a 7-6, 6-4 winner over Nick Dykema at number three and freshman
Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) earned his 12th win of the season with a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Trukov.
The Huskies will now travel south to Florida for their spring break trip, information on matches will be available on NIUHuskies.com.
