NIU Men's Golf Announces Salvador Rocha

DeKALB - NIU men's golf and Director of Golf Tom Porten announced the signing of Salvador Rocha to a National Letter of Intent Tuesday. Rocha, the No. 1 ranked junior in Mexico in the Class of 2015 by Junior Golf Scoreboard, will join the program in the fall of 2015.

"We are very pleased and excited to welcome Salvador to the Huskie Golf Program. Salvador is a talented young man, who has really come into prominence in the last year and we like his potential to have a big impact on our program. He has competed at a high level both internationally and in several AJGA events," said Porten.

"He spent the last two years at the Dylan Ross Golf Academy in Mexico City, learning our language and honing his skills. He is an excellent iron player with a solid short game.  His enthusiasm, experience, and work ethic are strengths and he really connected well with our guys on his visit. We can't wait till he arrives for good in August," added Porten.

In 2014, Rocha posted three top-10 finishes, including two consecutive third-place finishes at the TJGT Redstone Championship at the Golf Club of Houston and at the TPC Crag Ranch Championship in McKinney, Texas. He carried a 73 stroke average during the season with a best round of 69 at Aaron/Bob Estes Abilene Junior Championship on July 14.

As a junior in 2013, Rocha carried a 75 stroke average with a best round of 68. He finished fourth at the Texas Junior Tour Augusta Pines Major in Spring Texas, closing the tournament with a 69. Rocha also a top-10 finish at the Mexican National Cup in Yucatán.

Rocha's stock in he international class of 2015 rankings sky rocketed this year, as he jumped over 800 spots on the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings, where he currently ranks No. 354 in the world. He is the No. 1 ranked junior golfer in Mexico.

Rocha, a native of Mexico City, will graduate this May from the American School Foundation. He plans on pursuing a degree in engineering, focusing on sustainable energy.

NIU men's golf will enter championship season Friday morning for the Mid-American Conference Golf Championship at the Sand Ridge Golf Course in Chardon, Ohio.
