NIU QB Drew Hare Focuses on Improving in Year Two

DEKALB, Ill. -- It was a busy day as the new crop of freshmen arrived on campus on Northern Illinois University's annual Move-In Day Friday. As the new Huskies moved in, the NIU football team was back at work at Huskie Stadium turning in its 16th practice of 2015 fall camp.

Originally scheduled to last 16 periods and take place in the afternoon, the Huskies worked out for 21 periods in full pads in ideal conditions Friday morning. The final practice before tomorrow's full scrimmage, which will take place at 10:05 a.m., NIU head coach Rod Carey was pleased with the team's performance.

"Today's practice was good and there's no other way around it," he said. "The tempo was good. The energy was good. The execution was a lot better. It still has to get better. It's not there. I'm glad we got two weeks before our game because we have a lot of work to do."

While the football-only portion may be over Saturday, classes start up on Monday, he stressed to the team after practice that camp isn't over.

"We have a big scrimmage tomorrow," he said. "That will tell us a lot too. We have another week of camp. Even though we're still in school, we have another week of camp."

The defense had the better of the day, however, the Huskie offense had its moments. During one of the team sessions, NIU quarterback Drew Hare connected with wide receiver Kenny Golladay on an eight-yard touchdown pass.

This camp has been quite different for Hare and the Huskies for that matter. Last season, Hare was in a three-way battle for the starting quarterback job. Waged well into the 2014 season, Hare won the job after leading the Huskies to a 23-15 victory over in-state foe Northwestern. Now the established starter, Hare has had a whole new mindset during this camp.

"Being the starter, it's a whole different feeling then last year's camp when I was battling with two other guys," Hare said. "It's a little easier in that sense, getting better at my own skills."

"It's always nice when you have a quarterback coming back and you don't have a quarterback battle," said NIU offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bob Cole. "You're pretty much way ahead from day one. That's pretty much been the case through camp right now.

Hare had a solid season in 2014, throwing for 2,322 yards and 18 touchdowns and a nation's best two interceptions. He was just as impressive with his legs, rushing for 900 yards and eight touchdowns on 159 attempts, which ranked second on the team in all three categories.

Anthony Maddie, who was also in the mix for the starting job last season, saw some live action last season, playing in nine games for NIU. He rushed for 201 yards on 44 carries, while passing for 227. He has improved a great deal this camp, as has redshirt freshman Ryan Graham. Now in his second year in the system, he has been splitting time with Maddie working with the twos in practice. Cole is pleased with the progress the two have made in camp.

"Maddie is right there with Drew and Graham's picking these up too," he said. "This is his first time really with us. He was redshirted all of last year. We have three good ones right there. We're happy with how they work.
