MADISON, Wis. – The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team opened its dual match season with a 5-2 loss at Wisconsin on Friday night, sophomore Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and sophomore Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) posted singles wins for the Huskies.
In doubles play, Wisconsin picked up the points with a pair of 6-2 victories. Josef Dodridge and Lamar Remy defeated sophomore Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) and Lundkvist at number one while sophomore Louis-Philippe Hamel (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and Hjertonsson fell to Jakhongir Jalolov and Jose Carranza at number two.
The third doubles match between Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) and Erich Schuette (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Alexander Kokorev and Darius Mackenzie was stopped at 5-4 with the doubles point already decided.
In singles action, Hjertonsson claimed a straight sets win, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), over Remy and number three and Lundkvist was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Jalolov at number four, but the Badgers took the other four matches to clinch the victory.
NIU will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 24, as the Huskies host a pair of matches at Chick Evans Field House in DeKalb. The Huskies will face Detroit at 11 a.m., and will take on UW Whitewater at 3 p.m.
