TOLEDO, Ohio - The NIU women's soccer team (4-8-4, 3-4-2 MAC) fell to Toledo (7-9-1, 2-6-1 MAC) Thursday on a game-winning goal in double overtime by Isa Echeverri of the Rockets.
Â
The goal was set up on a corner kick by Kiersten Johnson after Toledo barely missed on an opportunity in the box that was just blocked by either goalkeeper
MacKenzie Lee (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) or defender
Natalia Pena (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates).
Â
Lee (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) got the starting spot in goal due to an injury to
Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) that was suffered in the game against Buffalo. Lee was up to the task, making nine saves in 104 minutes before Toledo got the goal in overtime.
Â
"Mackenzie had a great game, she was focused and ready to go," Head Coach
John Ross said. "She made a couple of big saves throughout the game and her biggest save came right before the goal on the play that gave them the corner."
Â
The Huskies had some scoring opportunities, one near the end of regulation as
Allie Ingham (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) just missed putting a header on target and another chance with about 15 seconds left in the first overtime as
Kelsey Chope (San Jose, Calif./Leland) fired a shot on goal that was saved over the crossbar by Toledo keeper Katie Wilson.
Â
Regulation went by scoreless as both teams shared possession about evenly for most of the game with the Rockets getting a few more chances near the net. Toledo took six more shot, had one more seven on goal and had eight corner kicks to NIU's three.
Â
NIU women's soccer will now head to Bowling Green to play the Falcons on Sunday at noon and their final game of the regular season will be next Thursday at Western Michigan.
