Huskies Down Cleveland State to Cap Perfect Weekend

Feb. 14, 2016

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team picked up its fifth-straight victory, and completed a perfect 3-0 weekend, with a 5-2 win over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon at Boylan Tennis Center. With the win, the Huskies improved to 8-3 on the season.

“I’m really proud of our guys for the weekend we had,” said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. “Cleveland State is really good and our guys were ready today. We backed up our good win against Illinois State (on Friday) and this is something we can build on. I am hopeful this gives us extra motivation to want more because we have yet to play our best.”

NIU took the opening point of the day with wins at second and third doubles. Sophomores Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) and Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) claimed a 6-4 win at number two and sophomores Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) took a win at number three, 6-3.

In singles play, Hamel and sophomore Austin Russell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) each dropped just four games en route to wins at two and six, respectively. Hamel claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Colton Buffington while Russell was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Andre Mick.

Junior Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) picked up a victory at number one, 6-2, 6-4, over Mirko Radosevic and Hjertonsson outlasted Benjamin Slade, 7-6, 6-3, to win at number four.

The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they host three matches. NIU will welcome Butler to Rockford on Friday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m., before hosting SIU Edwardsville and Western Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 20.
