GLENDALE, Ariz. - The NU baseball team played its fourth and final game of the opening weekend at Camelback Ranch Sunday afternoon, falling to Boston College, 17-0.
“Today we learned a very valuable lesson; you cannot take anything for granted. Going about your business the right way will carry you far. Do things the wrong way, disrespecting the game, and you will pay the price and today we paid dearly for it,” said Head Coach Mike Kunigonis.
“We will get back at it this week and prepare for Murray State next weekend. Our staff will be ready to coach hard all and get the ship back on track,” Kunigonis added.
Danny Hyde (Chicago, Ill./Oakton CC) tossed 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one hit and fanning two in the effort. Hyde totaled three scoreless innings in the series versus Boston College.
The junior tossed the seventh and eighth innings for NIU as he allowed one runner in his first inning and got himself out of a jam in his final inning as he struck out Jake Alu with runners on first and second to usher in the bottom of the eighth.
Carl Russell (Grayslake, Ill./Grayslake North) finished 2-for-2 at the plate as a substitute for Tommy Hook (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) who had a double in two plate appearances. Justin Fletcher (Pekin, Ill./Illinois Central) also recorded a double against the Eagles.
Fletcher led Northern Illinois University at the plate against the ACC foes, recording four hits including two doubles with an RBI.
Russell entered the game in the top of the sixth inning and recorded his first hit in the bottom of the frame on a two-out single through the left side. The junior would hustle out an infield single to lead off the ninth inning but the effort was too late as the Huskies were unable to scratch across the plate.
Northern Illinois University will return to action Friday, Feb. 26 when it heads to Murray, Ky., to take on Murray State in a four-game set with the Racers.
