Cameron Clinton-Earl Earns NFF Honor

April 28, 2016

DeKALB, Ill. – For the seventh straight season, Northern Illinois University has had a football student-athlete earn membership in the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame’s Hampshire Honor Society as defensive end Cameron Clinton-Earl earned the recognition Wednesday.

Clinton-Earl, a 2015 senior from Milwaukee who earned his undergraduate degree in psychology and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in counseling at NIU, is the 15th player in school history named to the Hampshire Honor Society. He is one of 23 MAC student-athletes named to the 868-man list for 2016.

The Hampshire Honor Society is made up of college football players from all division of play who maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher throughout their college career and was a starter or significant contributor to his team as a senior.

Clinton-Earl, who was also named a MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete, and is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection, was also honored by the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter in February as a Mental Toughness Award winner. His path included overcoming two significant injuries as a young player en route to starting at defensive end for the Huskies throughout the 2015 season.

He finished 2015 with a career high 37 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks. His best game of the season came at Boston College where he recorded three tackles for loss and a career-high seven tackles.

NIU, the winningest Football Bowl Subdivision program in Illinois, has won 65 games over the last six seasons, tied for the sixth highest total in FBS. NIU’s eight consecutive bowl appearances are a school and MAC record. The Huskies return 56 letterwinners and 16 starters for 2016, led by All-American cornerback Shawun Lurry, who led the nation in interceptions, and Freshman All-American offensive lineman Max Scharping. NIU opens the 2016 campaign Sept. 3 at Wyoming and will play six home games, including the Huskie Chi-Town Showdown at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, the first football game ever played at the facility.
