NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Rising senior
Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France Lycee Pierre Beghin) of the Northern Illinois University men's golf team tied for first-place at the United States Amateur Qualifying section at Naperville Country Club on Monday to advance to the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Fillon carded a five-under 139 in the one-day, 36-hole qualifier, tying Doug Ghim of the University of Texas for first.
After starting three-under par through 10 holes of the opening round, Fillon fell back to an even-par 72 following the first 18 holes. At even-par through four in the second 18, Fillon carded birdies on the par five fifth hole and the par four ninth to make the turn in the second round at two-under. The Huskie senior-to-be carried the momentum of his ninth hole birdie on to the back nine, where he carded birdies on No. 10, 12 and 13 as he finished the round with a five-under 67, tied for the lowest round of the day.
Fillon's qualification for the U.S. Amateur marks the second consecutive year in which a Huskie has reached the tournament. In 2015,
Jordan Wetsch qualified for the U.S. Amateur with a third-place finish at the Grove Country Club (Long Grove, Ill.) qualifier.
The 116th U.S. Amateur Championship will take place Aug. 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.
