DEKALB, Ill. – The Black team overcame an eight-point deficit to defeat the Red team, 12-11, in the Northern Illinois University Wrestling team's annual Red/Black Dual at Victor E. Court on Friday.
Trailing 11-8 heading into the final match of the evening, redshirt-junior
Bryce Gorman (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) of the Black team defeated freshman
Will Feldkamp (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), 14-6, giving Gorman's team four points and the victory in the dual.
The Red team jumped out to an 8-0 lead as they had victories in their first two matchups including sophomore
Brock Hudkins (Danville, Ind./Danville) at 125 and redshirt-junior
Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/ Marion) taking the bout at the 133/14 exhibition match.
Hudkins dominated the bout winning, 11-3, over freshman
Bryce West (Solon, Iowa/ Solon), while Jeffery defeated sophomore
Anthony Rubino (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East), 12-1.
The tide shifted at 141 between a pair of freshman.
Breyden Bailey (Fishers, Ind./ Catherdral) defeated
Bryce Thurston (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) with a technical fall, 17-0, scoring five points for the Black team. Red held on to a 8-5 lead.
The most highly contested bout was between senior
Colin Holler (Frankfort, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and redshirt-junior
Andrew Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly). Holler won 2-1 with all points coming on escapes.
"That was a highly-contested bout and they wrestled hard," said NIU Head Wrestling Coach
Ryan Ludwig of the Holler-Scott match. "Andrew is a weight class above Colin, but Colin is a very accomplished wrestler. It was nice to see those guys get a high-profile match."
Redshirt-sophomore
Michael Aldrich (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) and senior
Quinton Rosser (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) battled at the 174-pound match. Rosser received three points for the Black team as he won another highly contested bout, 4-3, to pull the Black to within three, 11-8.
"I thought 174 was a matchup we were looking to see," said Ludwig. "Those guys are a couple of seasoned guys in the program, and I thought that they wrestled well."
Ludwig was pleased with how his squad performed in the Red/Black Dual.
"I think they got out there and got after each other despite the familiarity with each other," said Ludwig. "They gave the crowd a great show, there was some scoring going on, and some interesting positions, so we were happy with it."
The Huskies will be back in action this Saturday, Nov. 4, as they open their season in Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Open Tournament.
