NIU Gets Quality Start From Anderson, Fall Late To BC

Huskies leave nine runners on base in 9-1 loss in Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – The NIU baseball team lost their first game in Oklahoma Friday as they fell to Boston College 9-1. The Eagles scored all nine of their runs in the seventh and eighth innings after the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the 7th.

NIU got a quality start from sophomore William Anderson as he went six and a third innings, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two. However, Anderson was hit with the loss putting his 2017 record to 0-2.

"Tough loss today for Huskieball," Head Coach Mike Kunigonis said. "We got a very good start from Will Anderson and played very good defense."

Boston College scored four in the seventh after Anderson loaded the bases with one out then Jon Savarise came out of the bullpen and surrendered a walk and a sacrifice fly to allow two runs to score then Ryne Blanton came in a gave up a two-RBI double to BC's Jake Palomaki. The Eagles added five more off of Matthew Hoffman in the eighth before Dennis Jordan entered the game and got the final out of the eighth in his first collegiate appearance.

"We struggled offensively and out of the pen today," Kunigonis said. "We had our opportunities but we just couldn't capitalize on them."

The lone Huskies' run was scored by Brandon Mallder in the seventh as he led the inning off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, reached third on a balk and finally scored on a passed ball. The NIU offense was held to only two hits on the afternoon with singles from Tommy Hook and Alec Barger.

"We are still looking to put a complete game together in this very early season," Kunigonis said. "We need to bounce back and be ready to play another good team tomorrow."

NIU will be back in action tomorrow at Noon as they face the host Oklahoma Sooners. Huskie fans can follow the team on Instagram @niu_baseball and on Twitter @NIU_Baseball.
