ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team completed a weekend sweep on Saturday with a pair of wins, downing Wisconsin-Whitewater, 7-0, and Cardinal Strich, 6-1, at Boylan Tennis Center. With the two victories, the Huskies improved to 6-2 on the season. 

NIU opened the day by downing Wisconsin-Whitewater, 7-0. After claiming all three doubles matches, the Huskies did not lose a set en route to a six-match sweep of the singles. 

Sophomore Erich Schuette (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) was a double-bagel winner, 6-0, 6-0, at number six over Lucas Monterroso. Junior Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) dropped just one game in his 6-0, 6-1 win over Matt Zurowski as he earned his fifth consecutive victory. At number one, freshman Bor Schweiger Muzar (Crnomelj, Slovenia/Gimnm) dropped just four games in a 6-3, 6-1, win over Grant Thompson. 

The Huskies won close 7-5 sets at two, three and five, but junior Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun), senior Eric Marbach (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley/University of Denver) and junior Austin Russell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) each won their respective matches as the Huskies earned the 7-0 sweep. 

The Huskies then earned the match victory with five singles wins. NIU won in straight sets at two, three, four and five. Lundkvist was a 7-5, 6-2 winner over William East at two, Marbach claimed 6-0, 6-4 decision over Gian Pico at number three and Hjertonsson was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Caio Barros at number four. At number five, Russell, playing in his first dual match of the season, earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Raymond Weich. 

NIU closed with a three-set, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9, win by Muzar over Fabio Perasso at number one. 

The Huskies then topped the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch. The Huskies took the doubles points with wins and one and three, the match at number two was not finished.

NIU will return to action next Friday, Feb. 10, when the Huskies travel to Saint Louis University.
