ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The NIU baseball team (4-13) won the second game of their four-game series against Michigan 8-5 on Saturday.
"Good bounce back win today for HuskieBall," Head Coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "
Three was an important number for the Huskies in their win as they put up two three-run innings,
Roderick Bynum and
Tommy Szczasny each had a three-hit game and
Mike Roberson crushed a three-run home run in the fifth.
NIU got off to a hot start as Bynum led off the game with a double on the first pitch thrown by Wolverines' starter Ryan Nutof then was brought home on a triple by
Samuel Vega. Szczasny added a RBI with a double off of the left field wall scoring
Brad Wood, who singled earlier with two outs.
"It was a cold and raw day, very difficult to hit," Kunigonis said. "I was happy how we handled the adversity today all around."
Joe Hawks got the start for the Huskies and went five innings, giving up one earned run on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Aaron Rumfield pitched two innings in relief allowing an earned run on two hits and two walks.
"Hawks gave us quality innings and battled through his five innings today," Kunigonis said. "Rummy and Frank did a great job keeping us on top and Blanton looked just as dominant today as he was last week."
Andrew Frankenreider and
Ryne Blanton combined to finish off the win for NIU as Frankenreider went an inning and two thirds. He ran into some trouble in the ninth as Michigan scored three but that's when Blanton came in to shut it down for the final out of the game.
