INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team earned a weekend split as they defeated IUPUI on Saturday, 6-1. 

"Today our guys responded like I thought they would, we came out determined," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "It was good to get Bor back going, and Austin stepped in and did a great job getting himself ready at a moment's notice after doubles and provided us with a win."

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead when they claimed the doubles point. Junior Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) and senior Eric Marbach (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley/University of Denver) earned a victory at number one, 6-2, while the Jaguars claimed a victory at number two, sending the double point to the deciding third match. In that match, junior Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and junior Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) outlasted Marcus Nalley and Steven Christie, 7-6, taking the tiebreak 7-5, to give the Huskies the first point. 

NIU (11-5) won five of the six singles matches, including four in straight-sets, to earn the dual victory. Lundkvist defeated Christie at number one, 6-4, 6-4, at number three, Marbach downed Nalley, 6-3, 6-2. Hjertonsson claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kyle Whittaker at number five while junior Austin Russell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) was a late addition to the singles lineup and took a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bradley Luetschwager at number six. 

The lone three-set match came at number two where freshman Bor Schweiger Muzar (Crnomelj, Slovenia/Gimnm) was victorious, 6-4, 4-6, 10-0, over Jose Calero. 

NIU will return to action on Wednesday night, March 8, when the Huskies travel to Milwaukee to meet Marquette.
