DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team will play its final home match of the season on Sunday, April 16, when the Huskies host Western Michigan at 11 a.m., at the West Tennis Courts on campus in DeKalb.
NIU comes into the match with a 13-9 overall record, 2-3 in Mid-American Conference play and are tied with Toledo for the fourth, and final, spot in the conference tournament entering the final two weeks of league action.
The Huskies are coming off a 5-2 victory on Wednesday (April 12) over Binghamton. NIU took the doubles points and four of six singles matches in the victory over the Bearcats. Junior
Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and junior
Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) were straight-sets winners in singles action while both junior
Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) and senior
Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) recorded three-set, comeback victories.
Western Michigan comes to DeKalb with a 12-7 overall record, 3-1 in league play; the Broncos topped Binghamton, 4-3, on Monday (April 10) in Kalamazoo. Kennosuke Nouchi leads the way in dual matches for the Broncos with a 14-5 record.
Following Sunday's match, the Huskies will conclude the regular season next Sunday, April 23, when they travel to Buffalo to meet the Bulls.
