TOLEDO, Ohio – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team closed its 10-match road trip with a 5-2 setback at Toledo on Saturday afternoon. The defeat drops the Huskies to 12-9 overall, 1-3 in Mid-American Conference play.
"It was a rough day for us," said NIU head coach
Patrick Fisher. "We missed our chances in doubles and didn't help ourselves with slow starts in singles; that was the difference, we got outplayed today. We need a big performance on Wednesday against Binghamton."
The Huskies fell behind early as they dropped the doubles point for the first time in six matches. Toledo neared a pair of narrow doubles victories as Serjen Olmedo and Vince Anzalone edged junior
Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and junior
Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) at two, 6-4, while Thawin Suksathaporn and Reid Teatsorth topped freshman
Bor Schweiger Muzar (Crnomelj, Slovenia/Gimnm) and senior
Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe), 7-6, at three.
In singles play, Hamel won his third-straight match, and 10th dual match win of the season, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Teatsorth at number five. Manzanas also claimed a singles victory, downing Suksathaporn, 6-4, 6-4, at number six. Toledo (11-11, 2-3 MAC) was victorious in each of the top-four singles matches however to clinch the match.
NIU will return home on Wednesday, April 12, when it hosts Binghamton in the first home conference match of the spring.
