NIU Football Postgame Notes

NIU 38, toledo 15

***NIU earned its season high in points (38) and matched last week's season high rushing yardage total (296).

***NIU has won six straight games for the first time since Oct. 10-November 18, 2015.

***Two players went over the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time since Oct. 1, 2016 as Tre Harbison and Marcus Jones gained 139 and 103 yards, respectively.

***Sophomore tailback Tre Harbison recorded his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, and has run for more than 100 yards in back-to-back games.  The sophomore has gone over the 1,000 yard mark in rushing for his career (1,094).  Jones posted his second 100-yard day of the season and had the longest touchdown run of the season (44 yards) in the fourth quarter.

***NIU has now won five straight games over Toledo in Huskie Stadium. The teams played at Chicago's Guaranteed Rate Field in 2016.

***Sutton Smith blocked his second punt of the season, picked it up and scored on a 27-yard blocked punt return in the second quarter to give NIU a 17-9 lead.  The punt return score was Smith's first touchdown of the season, and third of his career with the previous two coming on fumble returns for TDs last year.

***As a team, NIU has blocked three punts and five total kicks this year, and the Huskies have now blocked 11 kicks in the last two seasons.

***Tight end Corey Lersch caught a touchdown pass for the second consecutive game with a career long 33-yard catch and run in the first quarter.  Lersch entered the game with 30 yards receiving on four catches, including his 13-yard TD catch last week to open the scoring at Akron.

***Sutton Smith sacked Toledo QB Eli Peters and forced a fumble for the fourth time this season and for the seventh time in his career to force a Toledo punt; the fumble was recovered by Toledo inside its 10-yard line.  Smith's sack was his ninth of the year (to lead the MAC) and the 24th of his career. He is tied with Sean Progar for third all-time at NIU in sacks.

***Andrew Gantz hit a 48-yard field goal in the first half for the second-longest make of his Huskie career, and his longest since the Utah game on Sept. 8.

***Marcus Childers scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and leads the Huskies with five on the year.  He has accounted for 15 of NIU's 23 TDs on the year with 10 passing.

***Jack Heflin tallied a career-high two-and-a-half sacks and three-and-a-half tackles for loss.
