MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team concluded its weekend trip to the State of Wisconsin with a 5-0 setback to Marquette on Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the loss, NIU falls to 7-3 on the season.
In the doubles, seniors
Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and
Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) won the first match to finish, bettering Greg Anderson and Luis Heredia Gomez, 6-1, at number two. Marquette came back to take the point with wins at one and three as the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Marquette continued their momentum from the doubles through singles play as the Golden Eagles took each of the bottom four matches in the lineup in straight sets. Brandon Shanklin topped junior
Erich Schuette (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius), 6-0, 6-2, at number six. Luis Heredia Gomez defeated sophomore
Bor Schweiger Muzar (Crnomelj, Slovenia/Gimnm) at number three, 6-1, 6-3.
At number five, Brett Meyers claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hjertonsson and the match concluded with Greg Anderson's 6-0, 6-1 win over Hamel at number four.
NIU will return to action next Sunday, Feb. 18, when the Huskies host IUPUI at Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford.
