DEKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team travels to the State of Wisconsin this weekend as the Huskies play a pair of matches, facing Green Bay on Saturday, Feb. 10, at noon before facing Marquette on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. Both matches will take place in Milwaukee at Marquette's Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
NIU heads to Milwaukee with a 6-2 overall record following a weekend split last weekend against Cleveland State and Case Western Reserve.
Senior
Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) is the reigning Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week after winning both of his matches last week against Cleveland State and Case Western; Lundkvist has a 4-2 mark in dual matches this season.
Freshman
Kristopher Ortega (Homer Glen, Ill./Seton Home Study School) leads the Huskies with six singles wins in dual matches. Ortega has claimed victories at number two, three and four this spring, moving up the lineup each weekend this season.
Green Bay brings a 1-2 record into play this weekend. The Phoenix are coming off a 4-0 setback against Wisconsin last Saturday (Feb. 3). Last season, the Huskies edged the Phoenix, 4-3, in Aurora, Ill., NIU took the doubles point and had singles victories from
Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium),
Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and former Huskie
Carlos Manzanas.
Marquette comes into the weekend with a 3-1 overall record and will take on Green Bay before hosting the Huskies. After opening the season with a loss at Iowa, the Golden Eagles have won three-straight matches, all at home, against East Tennessee State, Valparaiso and UIC. Marquette went 15-9 last season and reached the final of the Big East Tournament, before falling to Butler. The Golden Eagles topped the Huskies last year, 6-1, in Milwaukee.
Following this weekend's trip north, the Huskies will return home as they host IUPUI on Sunday, Feb. 18, in Rockford.
