DEKALB, Ill. – After a seven-game trip through Kentucky, the Northern Illinois University softball travels up I-75 to Bloomington, Ind. for the Hoosier Classic starting Friday.
The Huskies (5-17) start off the Hoosier Classic on Friday playing in-state opponent UIC at 9:00 a.m. before facing Green Bay at 11:30 a.m. NIU will face rematches against the Phoenix at 11:30 a.m. and the Flames at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday to close the tournament. All times are Central.
"We look forward to finishing our spring break trip to Bloomington," NIU head softball coach
Christina Sutcliffe said. "We need to focus on UW Green Bay and UIC and figure out how to come out there with some wins. The momentum would be huge for us heading into conference play. "
The Huskies displayed some pop at the plate in seven games in Kentucky. Sophomore
Kayla Scaperrotta (Margate, Fla. /Coral Springs Carter School), senior
Bekah Harnish (Maple Park, Ill. /Burlington Central) and junior
Dominique Greeno (Lacey, Wash. /North Thurston) all hit home runs in the last seven games. Greeno leads the team with four homers with a slugging percentage at .743. Scaperrotta leads NIU batting with a .393 average.
Junior
Jenny Van Geertry (Mokena, Ill. /Lincoln-Way East) paces the Huskies with 24 hits and is second in batting average, hitting at a .369. Senior
Alaynie Woollard (New Castle, Ind. /New Castle) has a team-high four triples, including an RBI triple against Louisville on Wednesday.
Alex Frenz, a native of Oakville, Mo., leads the Huskies in the circle. The junior hurler is 2-4 with a team-leading 4.33 ERA in 42 innings of work. Frenz came in in relief in five of the six games she appeared in in Kentucky, posting a 1-1 record with a 1.84 ERA in 19 innings of work.
