BLOOMINGTON, IN – The Northern Illinois University baseball team suffered an 18-0 setback to No. 14 nationally-ranked Indiana University Friday evening at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Hoosiers rolled to their 13th win of the season, and their fourth-straight, as they pounded out 17 hits. NIU fell to 4-12 on the year.
IU plated six runs in the first inning off Huskies' starting pitcher
Donovin Sims (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community), and two more in the third, three in the fifth and seven in the eighth. Freshman Justin Walker highlighted IU's offense with a grand slam in the eighth to finish off the scoring.
"We need to bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow," Huskies' head coach
Mike Kunigonis said.
Samuel Vega (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Southwestern Junior College),
Kam Smith (Colonial Beach, Va./The Steward School) and
Tommy Szczasny (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) each had a hit to highlight the offense for NIU. Szczasny roped a double in the eighth inning.
NIU looks to rebound in Game 2 tomorrow at 1 p.m. Junior RHP
Tanner Foster (St. Charles, Iowa/Southeastern Community College) will take the mound for the Huskies.
"We're looking forward to a good start from Tanner to get us back in it tomorrow," Kunigonis said.
