2018 Northern Illinois Baseball Schedule

ATHENS, OH – The Northern Illinois University baseball team looks to continue its momentum in Mid-American Conference play as the Huskies hit the road for their first MAC road trip to Ohio University in two seasons.

NIU hopes to build on its two-game winning streak after the Huskies defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago 5-1 Tuesday, on the heels of its first MAC win of the season – a 9-5 triumph over Central Michigan University at Ralph McKinzie Field Sunday, March 25.

Tuesday at UIC, NIU took advantage of seven hits, and four Flames' errors to even the season series at one apiece. The Huskies also earned their third win in the last five games in improving their record to 7-16 overall.

NIU used a trio of pitchers, led by a solid outing from sophomore Blake Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), who earned his first win of the season. Walker worked five innings, and fanned three batters before giving way to Eric Hammer (Rochester, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) and Parker Kirkpatrick (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence), who combined to throw the final four innings.

During its last two victories, the Huskies are hitting nearly .300. Senior Brad Wood (Orland Park, Ill./St. Laurence) continues to lead the team with a .298 batting average and is tied for the team lead with two home runs.

Despite a few uncharacteristic fielding errors, NIU pitchers have helped right the ship as well during the streak as they have allowed only four earned runs and are carrying a collective 2.00 ERA.

"We're going to be facing a really good Ohio team," Huskies' head coach Mike Kunigonis said. "They've been playing really well despite coming off a MAC series loss and a midweek non-conference loss. So hopefully we can continue to capitalize on our momentum and their negative momentum, put the two together and get a weekend series' win."
