MUNCIE, IN – The Northern Illinois University baseball team hopes to continue its momentum as it travels to Ball Diamond Park for a three-game series with the Ball State Cardinals this weekend.
While the Huskies have seen immense success at Ralph McKinzie Field in their last seven home games (6-1 record), it's been a reverse effect on the road as NIU is 0-4 in its last two road trips to Kent State University, and the University of Iowa.
"We've been playing pretty good baseball here for about a good 10 days and we've seen this over the course of the last few months," Huskies' head coach
Mike Kunigonis said. "We talk with our guys constantly about trusting the process and eventually we're going to get paid off for the hard work we've been putting in, and we're really starting to see the fruits of our labor."
NIU is coming off its best offensive performance of the season as the Huskies pounded out 19 hits in a 20-2 victory over visiting NAIA opponent Robert Morris University April 25, NIU's second win over an NAIA opponent this season. Huskie hitters connected for three home runs and scored five or more runs in the third, seventh and eighth innings.
"We're definitely very excited about how we're playing right now and we need to keep it going," Kunigonis said. "If we trust the process good things will happen."
NIU's starting pitching rotation in its last MAC series against Miami (OH) had a collective 0.43 earned run average and averaged nine strikeouts per game.
"We've been pitching extremely well lately and really all year with Tanner (Foster), Michael (Lasiewicz) and now Will (Anderson)," Kunigonis said. "Will came up huge last week and had two great outings which earned him a start, so I think our guys are very confident in our staff. It doesn't matter who we put out there they're going to give us an opportunity to win that day."
