KINGSTON, Jamaica – Northern Illinois University junior Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) competed in her hometown on Sunday in the 2018 Jamaican National Senior Championship.

"Jehvania has had a dream track and field season," said NIU Director of Track & Field Connie Teaberry. "Her accomplishments, this year, are like a fairy tale for an athlete. She has represented NIU the entire season with class and pride. One more Huskie letting other institutions know that NIU is bringing heat."

Whyte finished second in the triple jump competition with a distance of 13.10 meters (42' 11.75") as the second youngest competitor in the event. She was able to out-jump Shardia Lawrence from Kansas State University and Shanique Wright from the University of Minnesota with marks of 12.98 meters and 12.49 meters, respectively, but was unable to touch 26-year-old Shieka Ricketts' 14.39-meter jump.

"She had the opportunity to compete in front of her family, peers, and former teachers and was able to capture second at the Jamaican National Championships" said Teaberry. "We have to wait to see if her finish claims her a spot to represent Jamaica this summer. Regardless, I am a proud coach and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Jehvania. From here it's looking pretty bright!"

Whyte is waiting to see if she will qualify for the Jamaican team that will compete in the North American, Central America and Caribbean that will be held in Columbia, August 10-19.  For the latest updates on Whyte and the NIU track & field program, follow the Huskies on Twitter, @NIUXCTrack and @NIUAthletics as well as NIUHuskies.com.
