TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team won the doubles point and took five of the six singles matches as the Huskies topped Toledo, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon in the final match of the regular season. With the win, NIU evens its overall record at 11-11 and improved to 3-4 in conference play. 

The Huskies and Rockets split a pair of 6-3 decisions in the doubles matches at two and three. Freshman David Pata (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and junior Bor Schweiger Muzar (Crnomelj, Slovenia/Gimnm) scored the win at number two for NIU over Danilo Vukotic and Vince Anzalone while Juan Carranza and Cole Shoults picked up the win for Toledo at three. 

NIU clinched the doubles point as freshman Mikko Malinen (Malmo, Sweden) and sophomore Victor Spolidorio (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) outlasted Luka Vitosevic and Omar Espinosa, 7-5, at number one to give the point to the Huskies. 

In singles, Muzar dropped just three games win a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Danilo Vukotic at number two and Pata conceded just four games in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Anzalone at number three. 

At the bottom of the lineup, NIU used a pair of close first set wins to take both of the matches at five and six in straight sets. Malinen scored a 7-5, 6-2 win against Thawin Suksathaporn at number five, 7-5, 6-2, and Spolidorio was a 7-5, 7-6 winner against Serjen Olmedo at number six. 

The final Huskie victory came at number four where sophomore Kristopher Ortega (Homer Glen, Ill./Seton Home Study School), playing in his first match since February 9, scored a three-set win, 7-6, 5-7, 10-7, over Espinosa. 

NIU will begin the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Friday, April 19, in the quarterfinals in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Huskies will be the No. 3 seed and will meet No. 6 seed Binghamton at 9 a.m. CT on Friday morning.
