Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of NIU to Name Athletics’ Nutrition Center

DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University Athletics is proud to announce it has partnered with the Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of NIU on a gift via the NIU Foundation for the build-out of the nutrition center to benefit all student-athletes at NIU.

"We are so pleased to partner with the Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of NIU on this project. With the creation of the Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Nutrition Center, along with the overall upgrades taking place within the Northwestern Medicine Performance Center, it is an exciting time for our student-athletes," said NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics, Sean T. Frazier.

"For over 10 years, we, as an organization have been a supporter of the NIU Foundation and Athletics. We are so glad that we can continue our tremendous partnership," said PSK Alumni President, Kent Ebersold '85. "We believe there are many similarities in what our organization does on campus and how it correlates to the student-athletes. While we are happy to be able assist with the Nutrition Center, perhaps more importantly, we are excited to showcase how we as a Greek community and in particular, Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni, are able to further establish ourselves as campus partners."

The Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of NIU has committed to a naming rights gift of the Nutrition Center that recently began construction in the east corridor of the Barsema Hall of Champions between the Yordon Center and Kenneth & Ellen Chessick Practice Center. The Phi Sigma Kappa Nutrition Center will offer all NIU student-athletes healthy snacks and supplements throughout the course of their day.

This unique partnership brings together a number of campus and community entities. As a part of the Northwestern Medicine Performance Center, the Phi Sigma Kappa Nutrition Center will work in coordination with the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education as well as Campus Dining Services to provide staffing that assists with nutrition and dietary information, meal planning and a number of educational opportunities.

The Greek community continues to play a vital role on campus and has a long and storied tradition at NIU. Similar to student-athletes, members of the Greek community are provided opportunities for leadership development, skill development, community service and civic engagement, support for academic achievement, along with increased retention and graduation rates.

"I know how important it is to have a strong partnership between NIU and the Greek community.  NIU has many needs and it is great when Greeks can give back to their University.  Providing funds to help establish a Nutrition Center in the Athletics Department is a fantastic way to help our students at NIU.  Thanks to all who have helped make this happen," said NIU Alumni Association President and former Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity member Pete Garrity.

As part of the gift, there will be further opportunities to collaborate with NIU to bring attention and educational opportunities to the complex issues surrounding mental health. This is a critical topic for all NIU students, not just student-athletes or the Greek community.

"After hearing first-hand accounts at the recent MAC Mental Health Summit, I am convinced we must take an active leadership role in both educating and providing our students the necessary services they need to deal with issues surrounding mental health. We are so proud that Phi Sigma Kappa in coordination with NIU Athletics is willing to invest in these needed resources." Frazier said.
