SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior
Remy Amarteifio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) of the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team ran a personal-best, and school record-setting, time of 13.41 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday night at the NCAA West Preliminary, but it wasn't enough to advance to the quarterfinals.
"What a heartbreaker for Remy," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "She ran a PR and set a new school record and fell two spots short of making it to the next round. She ran a well-executed race and her focus was stellar. I couldn't have asked for more from Remy today."
Competing in the fifth of six heats, Amarteifio took fourth place in her heat with a time of 13.41 seconds, which provisionally put her into Saturday's quarterfinal round with one heat to go. In an extremely fast sixth heat, Hope Bender of UC Santa Barbara picked up the last qualifying spot with a fifth-place finish of 13.39 and sixth-place Taylor Pegram of UNLV also edged Amarteifio's time by three one-thousandths of a second, as the Huskie junior saw her season come to a close.
"Remy's 2018-19 season has been filled with great improvements and races," said Teaberry. "We will keep plugging away at getting faster and efficient over the hurdles and watch her continue to progress forward during her senior year."
Amarteifio's 13.41 broke her own previous school record of 13.48 seconds, which was set last season at the MAC Championships (May 12, 2018).
NIU will conclude action at the NCAA West Preliminary on Saturday, May 25, as freshman
Diamond Riley (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenour) and senior
Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) compete in the triple jump at 5 p.m. CT.
