Calloway Wins High Jump at Fighting Illini Challenge

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Arianna Calloway (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) won the high jump as the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team competed in the Fighting Illini Challenge on Saturday (Jan. 24) at the University of Illinois.

"We are progressing in some events and others we must implement the techniques we work on in practice in our events," said NIU Director of Track and Field Connie Teaberry. "The athletes' spirits are positive which gives them the ability to keep improving. Our intensity in both practice and competitions will continue to rise and the performances will shine through. We are trusting the process."

Calloway and teammate Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) were the only two competitors in the high jump field to clear the bar at 1.65 meters (5-05.00). Calloway cleared the height on her first attempt, giving her the tiebreaker victory over Raes who cleared it at the second attempt.

In the triple jump, Precious Umukoro (Villarreal, Spain) measured a season-high jump of 12.28 meters (40-03.50), fifth best in the Mid-American Conference this season, to finish fourth.

NIU also had a pair of top three finishes in both the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles. In the 60 meters, Esther Momalife (Lagos, Nigeria) ran a season-best time of 7.81 seconds to take second while Natasha Chetty (Victoria, Seychelles/Seychelles Business Studies Academy) was third in 7.92 seconds.

Miashlie Jean (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Northeast) was second in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 9.01 seconds, just ahead of teammate Kyla Motley (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) who was third in 9.15.

In the relay, the quartet of Momalife, Chetty, Samira Rosenfeld (Schaumburg, Ill./Schuamburg) and Jean were victorious with a time of 4:17.45.

NIU will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31, at Notre Dame's Meyo Classic.
