AVON, Ohio – Sophomore pitcher
Michael Lasiewicz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) and junior third baseman
Tommy Szczasny (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) of the Northern Illinois University baseball team were named to the Mid-American Conference Baseball Championship Team Saturday night following the championship game.
Lasiewicz threw NIU's first complete game shutout in over five years in Wednesday night's 4-0 win over Miami in the opening round. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and a walk to the RedHawks, striking out eight to advance NIU to the winner's bracket. The win was NIU's first in the MAC Tournament since 2008.
Szczasny hit .538 in four games at the MAC Tournament with a slugging percentage of .846. The junior reached base 11 times in 17 plate appearances. Szczasny was 3-for-4 against Ball State on Thursday night. In an elimination game Friday afternoon, Szczasny hit a two-out, three-run home run to cap a five-run seventh inning that put NIU ahead 6-2 over Ohio. He capped his tournament by reaching base in all six plate appearances Saturday against Ball State, going 2-for-2 with an RBI double, a stolen base, three runs scored, and four walks. Szczasny finished the season on an 11-game hitting streak.
NIU finished the 2019 season with a record of 20-36, reaching the MAC Tournament for the third time in four seasons. The Huskies won two games at the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2008.
