This Week in Huskie Athletics – April 1, 2026

DEKALB, Ill. – Six Huskie teams will be in action on the road this weekend as the NIU baseball and softball teams, as well as Huskie men's and women's tennis, travel for key conference contests. The NIU men's golf team will head to Tennessee while women's track and field competes in Texas. 

Baseball

NIU Baseball goes on the road this weekend for its first series ever against UMass. The Huskies have won six of their last seven games after winning last weekend's series against Bowling Green. Senior pitcher Max Vaisvila was named the MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week and the National Pitcher of the Week by both the College Baseball Foundation and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association this week for his 14-strikeout one-hit shutout of Bowling Green on March 28. Vaisvila has won each of his last five starts and leads the MAC in wins with five and strikeouts with 50. NIU enters the weekend at 8-4 in the MAC, tied with Toledo for fourth and only two games back of first place Ball State. UMass is 1-11 in the league after being swept at Western Michigan last weekend. 

Softball

NIU Softball has a brief road trip as they travel to Central Michigan for a three-game series on April 3 and 4. Action will start at 12 p.m. CT on April 3 in a doubleheader before the series finale on April 4 at 12 p.m. NIU has won two of their last three series, including a 2-1 series win over UMass on March 27-28.
 
The Huskies are led by Madison Carlson in the circle, who was named MAC Pitcher of the Week. Carlson has recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in two of her last three appearances with a 2.63 ERA. At the plate, Danielle Stewart leads the team with an average of .460 and 29 hits, eight doubles, and four home runs. Four other Huskies are hitting above .333 this season as NIU is hitting .324 as a team. 

Men's Golf
Friday-Sunday, April 3-5: Mason Rudolph Championship (Franklin, Tenn.) – Live Scoring

NIU Men's Golf opens a stretch of three tournaments in three weeks this weekend at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship. The tournament field features four of the top 25 teams in the country, including the #11-ranked Commodores, #12 Tennessee, #14 Ole Miss, #21 Charlotte. The Huskies were last in action on March 15 in the Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern. Sophomore Beau Petersen was the Huskies' top finisher, tying for 27th place with a 54-hole score of even par 216. He carded a season-low score of 67 in the second round. NIU last played in the Mason Rudolph in 2024, taking 11th place.

Men's Tennis
Thursday, April 2: at Buffalo, 12 p.m. – Live Stats

Riding a four-match winning streak, NIU men's tennis is off for a pair of road tests this weekend against Buffalo and Toledo. The Huskies just faced each opponents two weeks ago, walking away with wins over both.

NIU is coming off a 7-0 sweep of UIC and a 4-0 sweep of Judson in a Saturday doubleheader. The Huskies Only dropped one set between the two matches and were 9-0 in singles play. NIU is first in the MAC standings, just ahead of Buffalo (5-2) and Western Michigan (5-2).

Buffalo has won two of its last three since dropping the match to the Huskies on March 19 with all three matches ending by score of 4-3. Toledo has lost its last three, beginning with a 5-2 loss to NIU on March 21.

Women's Tennis
Friday, April 3: at Miami, 12 p.m. – Live Stats

The Huskies are off to Miami on Friday, aiming to stop a four-match losing skid. Last time out, NIU fell 6-1 to conference-leading UMass.

Isabella Righi / Lucia Yecora recorded a 6-3 win against UMass and have won four straight doubles matches with a team-best 10 wins this season.

Miami is 2-2 in its last four, taking losses to top conference teams in UMass and Buffalo while defeating Western Michigan and Bowling Green.

Women's Track and Field
Wednesday-Saturday, April 1-4: Texas Relays (Austin, Texas) – Live Video | Live Results
Thursday-Saturday, April 2-4: Bobcat Invitational (San Marcos, Texas) – Live Results

The NIU women's track and field team heads to the Lone Star State this weekend as the Huskies compete in a pair of meets, heading to the Texas Relays in Austin as well as Texas State's Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos. The Huskies return to Austin and San Marcos after not competing in these two events a season ago. In 2024, Arianna Calloway won the high jump competition at the Bobcat Invitational and finished 13th at the Texas Relays. 

This will be the second weekend of the outdoor season for the Huskies, who earned three event wins last week at Illinois State's Joyce Morton-Kief Invitational as Stella Oyebode won the 100 meters, Jasmijn Raes claimed the high jump and NIU won the 4x100-meter relay.
