DEKALB, Ill. -- Senior
Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) set a new school record with a mark of 6.04m (19-09.75) in the long jump as the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team concluded its regular season on Friday with the Huskie Classic at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
"We accomplished a lot today," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "The times may not show the magnitude of the great technical improvements the athletes made, but the staff definitely took notice. The wind got the best of us in most of the races with a strong head wind on the home stretch, but the athletes executed well through the conditions.
"Jehvania had an exceptional performance in the long jump. As usual, she is a gamer and put on a grand performance for the home crowd. She was feeling great and wanted to break the facility record. She had one of her best jump series, which not only smashed the facility record, she set a new PR and obtained a MAC Championship auto mark, and set a new school record. What a way to conclude your last outdoor season at NIU at home."
Whyte's leap, which came on her second jump of the competition, is the third-best long jump in the MAC this season and betters the previous school record of 6.00m (19-08.25) that Whyte set at the 2018 MAC Championships. Along with Whyte in the long jump, freshman
Diamond Riley (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenour) had a season-best jump of 5.62m (18-05.25), the 11th-best mark in the MAC this season.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior
Mercer Mack (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) posted a season-best time of 11:14.25, which ranks 14th in the conference.
The Huskies also recorded a number a season-best marks in the throws, with freshman
Taylor Ramsey (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central), sophomore
Fatima Stingily (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) and freshman
Christina Wood (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) each setting season best marks in the javelin. Ramsey had a best throw of 34.00m (111-06), Stingily measured 27.24m (89-11) with her top throw of the day and Wood measured 23.16m (76-00) on her best attempt.
Wood and Stingily also achieved season bests in the discus where Wood's top mark measured 38.90m (127-07) and Stingily had a best throw of 38.16m (125-02). The duo also produced their best hammer throw marks of the season as Stingily's best effort measured 41.06m (134-08) and Wood produced a best throw of 31.45m (103-02).
"The athletes truly enjoy competing at home," said Teaberry. "The support we get from our families and friends is uplifting. The athlete's confidence always rises another level when we are at home. I know some of our performances were due to the unconditional love the athletes receive before and during the competition. This is definitely the competition they look forward to all year, aside from conference (championships)."
Next week, the Huskies will head to the MAC Championships in Muncie, Ind. The three-day meet will begin on Thursday, May 9 and continue through Saturday, May 11.
