Whyte Earns Top 20 Finish at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) of the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team wrapped up the 2019 season with a 20th place finish in the triple jump on Saturday evening at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships.

On a hot evening with temperatures that reached the mid-90s, Whyte posted a mark of 12.84m (42-01.50) on her third jump, but was unable to advance in the top nine to the second round of three jumps.

"Unfortunately, we ended on a sour note," said NIU Director of Track and Field Connie Teaberry. "Technique just wasn't conducive to a big jump today and her competitors showed no mercy. Jehvania's outdoor track and field career at NIU comes to an end and we are proud of the representation and notoriety Jehvania has brought to the program.

"As of right now, she is our most decorated athlete at the MAC and NCAA level and we are proud of the work ethic and level of dedication she has shown. We still have one indoor season remaining, so it's time to rest and heal, and regroup mentally and physically."

On her first jump of the competition, Whyte posted a mark of 12.45m (40-10.25), which was 13th overall after one round of attempts. She improved her mark on her second attempt, measuring a distance of 12.78m (41-11.25) but slipped back to 17th overall in the competition.

With her third attempt of the competition, Whyte once again improved her mark with a jump that measured 12.84m (42-01.50), but it wasn't enough to advance to the second round of jumps as the Huskie senior finished 20th.

Whyte finishes the season as the Mid-American Conference champion in the triple jump, both indoors and outdoors.

"Jehvania's success, along with her teammates success, could not been achieved without the program's tremendous support staff," said Teaberry. "Some pushing Jehvania, and the team, to reach their full potential and others making her and the program's day-to-day task smooth.

"Our sport AD (Melissa Dawson), athletic trainer (Catherine Brown), strength and conditioning coach (Amanda Sheppard), academic support (Mo Brady), media relations and our business office have given the support we needed throughout the season and we are extremely grateful for the time and support they give the program. Their support makes competitions such as these stressless and smooth."
