DEKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University's
Enrique Banuelos of men's soccer was named to the 2021 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District® Team CoSIDA announced Thursday.
Tied for second in the Mid-American Conference and 37th nationally in assists with seven, Banuelos has started 13 of 19 games played this season, scoring three goals. The Huskie forward earned MAC Player of the Week honors earlier this season after scoring a goal and recording two assists in a 3-0 shutout at Western Michigan on Oct. 2.
A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Banuelos boasts a 3.95 cumulative grade point average while pursuing his degree in business administration. NIU's free kick specialist, three of his seven career goals have come on free kicks. Banuelos scored on a free kick in the Huskies' 1-0 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in this year's season opener.
Banuelos is the first Huskie to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District® honors since Jan Maertins in 2019 and one of seven players from the MAC to earn academic all-district honors in 2021.
NIU will be hosting the MAC Tournament beginning with the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 11. West Virginia will meet Georgia State in the first semifinal at 3 p.m., while the Huskies will face Bowling Green in the second contest at 6 p.m. The winners of Thursday's two semifinals will square off in the conference championship game on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 12 p.m.
Tickets for Thursday's doubleheader are $10 while Sunday's final will be $5, available at the gate on gameday, all seating is general admission. Students from the participating schools will be admitted free of charge with a student ID. All three matches will also be live streamed free of charge on NIUHuskies.com.
