DEKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University men's soccer head coach
Ryan Swan announced the promotion of
Andrew Bordelon to associate head coach on Wednesday (Feb. 24). Bordelon is in his fourth season as a member of the Huskie men's soccer staff.
"Andrew has been here since I took over the program and has been integral in helping us progress," said Swan. "He has proven his worth since day one and I am very happy for him to get this recognition and promotion. I'm excited about his future as a coach and what we can accomplish as a staff in the coming years."
Bordelon joined the NIU staff in 2017, Swan's first season as head coach at NIU. During his tenure in DeKalb, Bordelon helped mentor the program's first Major League Soccer draft pick, Kevin Rodriguez, who was selected by Minnesota United FC in the 2018 draft and helped four Huskies, Jan Maertins,
Anthony Markanich,
Nick Markanich and
Alex Welch, earn All-MAC honors in 2019, the most for the program in a single season in eight years.
Maertins became the program's sixth Academic All-American in 2019 and the Huskies have had 17 Academic All-MAC honorees in the last three seasons.
"I am grateful to
Ryan Swan and T.J. Feuerbach (NIU Senior Associate Athletic Director and men's soccer sport administrator) for the opportunity to continue to learn and grow under Coach Swan," said Bordelon. "I am very grateful for this new role, to continue working with Coach Swan,
Jack Mathis and our support staff and I look forward to continuing to strengthen the NIU men's soccer program."
Prior to joining the Huskies, Bordelon spent one season (2016) as head coach at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md., and three years (2013-15) as head coach at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
At Westminster, Bordelon guided the Blue Jays to three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and three Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) championships. In 2013, he was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Central Region Coach of the Year.
Bordelon played for Swan for four seasons (2006-09) at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., and then began his coaching career as an assistant at Drury for three seasons (2010-12) under Swan.
The Huskies play their final non-conference game on Friday, February 26, when they host Chicago State. NIU will open Mid-American Conference play next Saturday, March 6, at West Virginia.
