DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team returned to its winning ways with a 6-1 victory over Chicago State on Wednesday afternoon (March 10) at Chick Evans Field House. With the win, NIU improved to 11-1 overall, including a perfect 7-0 at home.
Chicago State took the first point of the day as the Cougars won two of the three doubles matches.
Kristopher Ortega and
Oliver Valentinsson combined for a 6-3 win at number two for the Huskies, but Chicago State won the matches at one and three to give the point to the Cougars.
In singles,
Mikael Vollbach dropped just four games in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pablo Alverez at number six while
Armin Koschtojan lost just five games in a 6-1, 6-4 victory at number five against Pedja Kolaric.
Ortega and Valentinsson each took momentum from their doubles win into singles play as Ortega downed Javier Sanchez Pradillo, 6-4, 6-2 at number two and Valentinsson was a 7-6, 6-4 winner against Jakub Zamorski at number four.
NIU's clean sweep of the singles also included a 6-4, 6-3 win for
Victor Spolidorio over Jesus Perez Plaza, playing at number four and a 7-5, 7-6 win over
Bor Schweiger Muzar over Jakov Suler at number one.
The Huskies will now turn their attention to Mid-American Conference play as they open the league slate on Friday, March 12, at Toledo.
